Dolomites and South Tyrol - Program 5

Day 1: The Ulten Valley and Europe’s oldest conifers

We await you at noon at the Hotel Marlena in Marling near Meran. The hotel is an insider tip and a relaxing retreat with fantastic views of the spa town Meran. At lunch you meet your fellow travellers and the escort team. Subsequently there is a comprehensive briefing on the cars and the roadbook. The wildly romantic Ulten Valley, where the rural history of South Tyrol is still present, makes the perfect start. Back at the hotel you have enough time before dinner for a lap in the pool or a tennis match.

Day 2: Andreas Hofer and the Penser Joch

Join us on picturesque mountain roads: you can see the tops of the Texel Mountains from the 2.094 meter high Jaufenpass before driving the curves down to Sterzing. The sparsely wooded mountain road to the Penser Joch leads you in wide sweeps to the Sarn Valley. Here you take your well-earned lunch break. You have certainly never seen South Tyrol so idyllic. The return journey leads through the Bozen Basin and Etsch Valley back to Marling.

Day 3: Mendelpass and Messner Mountain Museum

First we drive to the Mendelpass, a beloved holiday destination at the beginning of the last century due to the cable railway which was opened by Emperor Franz Josef in 1903. The 17 serpentines downhill to the Kaltern Lake are driving bliss through history: the uphill Mendel road until recently used to be the setting of a notorious hill climb race. At noon-time we reach the Messner Mountain Museum at Sigmundskron, initiated by Reinhold Messner. A cable car takes you up the Vigiljoch to a gourmet dinner in one of star designer Matteo Thun’s settings.

Day 4: Meraner Land and Schloss Trauttmansdorff

Today’s stage takes you through the Meraner Land to Schloss Trauttmansdorff. The favourite residence of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth I., known as »Sissi«, is now a »Touriseum« on the history of tourism and – on 12 hectares – one of the world’s most beautiful botanical gardens. Following an extensive visit you drive up to the mountain plateau at Hafling with its stunning panorama view of the Meraner Land. After lunch at a mountain inn you reel off the last kilometres along pictorial roads before bidding farewell to your Nostalgic Alfa Romeo.
